Mrs. Lucy Fern Abell, 102, of Forsyth, MO died Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Forsyth
Nursing Center. A committal service will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the
Court of the Eternal Peace, White Chapel Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Springfield, MO
alongside her late husband, Chester A. Abell.
Lucy Fern Abell was born Saturday, August 1, 1914 in Masonville, IA to Fred Herbert
and Lucy Elizabeth (Nece) Smith. Fern earned a Bachelor of Science from the University
of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She became an elementary school teacher, teaching
for thirty-four years in Iowa and California. Fern married Chester A. Abell in Spencer,
IA. Chet and Fern retired to Forsyth in the 1970's along with Fern's sister, Lucille
Fern and her husband, Chet, enjoyed collecting antiques, clocks and along with her
sister, Lucille, china making and creating beautiful hand pieced quilts. She also enjoyed
working cross word puzzles and playing solitaire. She was a lifelong Catholic and a
devoted member of Our Lady of the Ozarks Catholic Church.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chester A. Abell; four brothers and
